Nintendo DSi

I guess the rumours of a new Nintendo DS console were true as Nintendo just revealed to the world their new DSi console. The new DSi boasts a built-in web browser, externa SD slot, larger screen and even two (0.3 megapixel) integrated cameras! Also, the DSi will be lighter and even thinner than the DS Lite. The DSi will also have MP3 and video playback along with being able to play Nintendo DS games. It looks as though Nintendo is positioning the DSi to compete with Apple’s iPod Touch.

Nintendo also plans to introduce a new online store called the “DSi Shop” alongside the Japanese release of the DSi. The DSi show will sell games and other software via Wifi and will utilize the points cards used for the Nintendo Wii. The DSi is going to retail for about $180 USD in Japan on November 1st. While there has been no scheduled date for North America, Europe will see the release of the DSi during the spring of 2009. However, the Nikkei Business Daily reported that U.S. models will likely sell for around $130 USD.

Though the release of a new and improved Nintendo DS does sound appealing, it doesn’t seem to be much of a change from the previous model (DS Lite) to make me want to purchase one. I guess with the holiday season upon us, Nintendo just found a way to cash in on the success of their portable console.
