So the long awaited 65nm chip (codenamed Jasper) has finally been released in the market. The biggest advantage of the smaller chip is that it supposedly uses less power and thus gets less hot and requires less fans to cool it. This supposedly translates to a quieter console and hopefully does away with the “Red Ring of Death” once and for all.
I don’t know if this will actually make a difference in the amount of XBox 360 consoles requiring repair or replacement since the exact same statement was made when the Falcon chip was introduced a little while back. Anyhow, to ensure that you have the new Jasper chip, the manufacture date has to be no earlier than August 6, 2008, and the lot number is 8031 or above. But, if some of you are still on the fence, you can wait for the rumoured 45 nm Valhalla Chip with a supposed “slim” XBox 360 case sometime at the end of the year (remember, it’s only a rumour!).
