So I actually caved in and bought the new iPhone 3G (16 GB, Black) after seeing videos of some of the games available from the App Store like Super Monkey Ball and Bomberman. I started to notice that the graphics on the phone are actually quite good and are pretty comparable to even handheld gaming devices. Recently at QuakeCon 2008, Id Software co-founder John Carmack has been extremely impressed by the device that he’s been quoted saying that phone’s hardware are equivalent to the Sega’s Dreamcast and close to even the Sony Playstation 2 or Microsoft’s original XBox. What was also surprising that in terms of raw specifications, Carmack says that the iPhone is more powerful than Sony’s PSP and Nintendo’s DS…COMBINED!

After hearing that, I’m getting excited about the possibility of even more quality games for the iPhone. Though it’s a pretty bold statement to mention that the iPhone can outperform the top 2 handheld gaming consoles, I’m hoping that Carmack will be able to prove it with possible Doom , Wolfenstein or even Quake ports to the iPhone…that would be AWESOME! Actually, I’m hoping that companies like SquareEnix and Atlus would create some RPGs for the iPhone.
