When the original Tron movie was first released, I was barely 3 years old. However, later on when I was old enough, I got a chance to watch it on television and I must say that I was definitely blown away by the animation. It was one of those films that had a mixture of animation and real-life film and it must’ve been difficult back then since there was no such thing as CGI and motion capture. I think I remember reading that each frame was painstakenly drawn/painted by hand because of the lack of modern animation technology back in the day. Plus the film introduced the idea of people being transported into a virtual world (years before cyberspace and virtual reality existed).

Recently at the San Diego Comic Con, attendees were given a first look at the sequel to Tron and people can definitely see the enhancements to the animation. The film stars actor Jeff Bridges, who was actually in the original film (who played the character Kevin Flynn). Check out the preview video below:

It was definitely exciting to see the upgraded light cycles and the disc weapon the character was holding. I’m pretty sure that many fellow geeks/nerds will be excited about the upcoming film and I’m going to make sure that I watch this on the first day.
