Gundam Painting

I’m sure many of us have our favourite anime characters and most likely they’ll have pictures of them posted on their walls. Well, recently, a painting depicting the image of the Gundam RX-78-2 with a dragon wrapped around it, was sold at a Christie’s International Auction for a reported $4.8 million HKD (about $615,000 USD)!! The painting was drawn Japanese artist, Hisashi Tenmyouya, who is known to painting in the “neo-nihonga” style (which is described as combining traditional Japanese art which is inspired by anime/manga and western culture). The painting was originally created for the Gundam Creating Futures exhibit, which travelled to various Japanese museums from 2005-2007.

I’m actually surprised that a picture of an anime figure (let alone a Gundam) would fetch such a ridiculously high price. It’s either the buyer was an extremely big Gundam fan or else he/she has more money than they could possibly spend. I hope it’s the latter because I have a lot of anime figures/pictures I would part with at half the price of the painting…WHAT A STEAL! =)
