I had previously written a post here regarding a neat technical application called “head tracking” for the Nintendo Wii. It was great to imagine the future possibilities and uses for head tracking in upcoming games. Well, it looks like developers have heeded the advice of gamers. Recently at the Electronic Arts session at the Game Developers Conference, they introduced the design process of Steven Spielberg’s Boom Blox game. It was also revealed an “easter egg” whereby the player can navigate through the game utilizing head tracking! Here is a clip:
Though it’s only an easter egg within the Boom Blox game, the feature is already programmed onto the title and it’s definitely a step in the right direction as more developers take notice of this new technology in games. As for what is needed, it looks as though we’d simply need some special LED glasses or a wireless sensor bar. If my excitement in these developments are any indication of how gamers feel, I’m confident that finally we’ll indeed see revolutionary games not only on the Wii but in the next generation of gaming.
