After watching this year’s Superbowl (possibly the best I’ve ever witnessed), I’m in utter shock! The New York Giants had achieved the improbable by defeating the New England Patriots, arguably the greatest team in recent history. I’ve been following the NFL season on occasion and have been watching the Patriots dismantling their opponents week in and week out to a possible “perfect season”. As time went by and seemingly no opponent capable of stopping the Patriot juggernaut, a perfect season almost seemed inevitable. When it was finally determined that the Superbowl match-up was between the Giants and the Patriots, it was no longer a question of who was going to win, but rather how many points the Patriots were going to defeat the Giants. Though the Giants lost to the Patriots by the slimmest of margins (38-35) during the last game of the regular season, many people (including myself) weren’t convinced that the Giants had it within them to stop history in the making.
As I was watching the game however, I began to realize that the Giants were ready to play. The Giants were able to pressure Brady and keep the score fairly close throughout. With less than 2 minutes left and losing 10-7, Manning was able to drive down the field and connect with the winning touchdown to Plaxico Burress. With 35 seconds remaining, Brady was still a threat to mount a comeback, but it wasn’t meant to be and the Giants became victorious by a score of 14-7. Not only was it a great game and a classic “David vs. Goliath” matchup, but the Giants proved to their detractors that they were the real deal. In a way, the Giants victory helped to avenge all the Patriots opponents this season and perhaps karma caught up to the Patriots due to the whole “Spygate Scandal”. Though the Patriot’s season didn’t have that happy ending, they’ll get the chance to give it another go….next season. Again, congratulations to the New York Giants and thank you for winning one for the underdogs.
