So tomorrow the DVD boxed set of the First Season of Heroes will be officially released. Like most new series, I was kind of skeptical of watching it because it sounded like another attempt at making a comic book style television drama. This time around, there aren’t any recognizable heroes from Marvel or DC…just seemly normal people who discover they have special powers. After I watched the first episode, I was immediately drawn in because the creator, Tim Kring, can really create a cliffhanger after each episode to draw in people to anticipate the next episode.
The show basically talks about the exploits of all these seemingly normal people who discover they have these “special abilities”. As you watch, you learn about the lives of each character and find out how their lives are intertwined with one another and that they have the same common goal. My two favourite characters are Hiro Nakamura (played by Masi Oka) and Peter Patrelli (played by Milo Ventimiglia). I guess you would call them the “quintessential hero”, because they willingly use their powers for good and for the benefit of mankind (selflessness). I particularly like the innocence of Hiro Nakamura, who’s role seems to be inspired from Goku from the original Dragonball series. The famous catch phrase, “Save the Cheerleader, Save the World”, is about how saving the Cheerleader, Claire Bennet (played by Hayden Panettiere) could possibly save the fate of mankind.
Along the way, there is a comic book, called “Ninth Wonders”, drawn and written by one of the characters, Isaac Mendez (played by Santiago Cabrera) which seemingly predicts the events of the show before they have occurred and there is even a site devoted to that. The overwhelming popularity of the show has caused other studios to start trying to copy the formula which made Heroes an overnight sensation. After the end of the final season, another spinoff series will air this fall. Called “Heroes: Origins”, the show will introduce a new character each episode, and viewers will get to vote which character will join the original cast in the following season. The actual Second Season of Heroes will air shortly after the Origins series.
I personally can’t wait till Heroes comes back on the air because the First Season ended in a cliffhanger and I’m anxious to see the fate of the remaining characters. Heroes is a definitely must see for Sci-Fi, action and comic book fans. Each character has their unique personalities which will appeal to different audiences as well as the cliffhanger endings will keep you coming back for more. But because you have the whole season in a boxed set, you thankfully don’t have too wait long. A MUST watch!! =)
