Well, where to begin? This anime talks about the life and exploits of Simon, and how he starts off as a lowly digger to becoming the leader of a human interstellar rebellion. Accompanied by his close friend, Kamina (who often likes to be referred as Lord Kamina), they venture from their underground village to the surface and become involved in a war between the human race and beasts. They later meet new friends, new allies and the discover the reasoning behind the whole conflict.

My first impressions were that the animation looked pretty plain and didn’t seem to be up to par when compared to other current anime series, however, the storyline and the dialogue are what make this series special. I guess what they say is true, “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover”. The action and exchanges between Simon and Kamina are hilarious and their differences in personalities are what make them a great team (The Guren Brigade). I’m not really sure what series to compare this to…although I would say that Gurren Lagann does seem to mimic old-school mech animes from the 70’s and 80’s. I’ve been told that the series is very “Gar” which is a Japanese colloquial expression meaning “macho” or “manliness”, similar to how “Moe” means “cute” or “sweet”.

I would’ve never figured that Gainax (creators of FLCL, Neon Genesis Evangelion) would create this kind of anime, but so far, it hasn’t disappointed. If you are looking for a comedic, action-packed, hot-blooded, manly series…you’ll love this show! Recently, the show has been licensed by ADV Films, which means that you can expect this great series in North America in the near future!
